Boys Individual Rankings

Final End of Season Rankings (Posted 11/14/24)

The season is over, except for Nike and Footlocker regionals.  These are our final rankings, based on State Meet and New England Championship finishes.

Week 7 Rankings (Posted 10/30/24)

Sam Laverdiere surged back to #1 after winning the Class B South race by 30 seconds over Aidan Ring and running the fastest time of the day at Twin Brook by 16 seconds.  Conner Smith and Levi Riggs also exceeded expectations in Class B South and moved up in the rankings.  Up north, Griffin Merrill was our favorite in the Class B race and he was able to take the win, with Tristan Hughes a surprise 2nd place finish.

In the Class A races, Aran Johnson edged out Ellis Wood for the win in the Class A South, with Rivard not far behind.  In the North, Enzo Giampaolo was able to flip the script from KVACS and win over the Hampden duo of Collins and Valentine.

In Class C, Pi Crosby and Ben Arsenault both won their races, as expected, setting up a showdown for the Class C individual title.

Week 4 Rankings (Posted 10/10/24)

This week was a tough one for boys individual rankings! Formerly top-ranked Aidan Ring of York was defeated by Alex Gilbert at Freeport’s home meet.  Meanwhile, at the Festival of Champions, Sean Gray spoiled the day for the Mainers, breaking the course record in a sub 15:00 clocking.  While the Portsmouth junior took the win, Sam Laverdiere was the top Maine finisher in a stellar time of 15:39, followed by Portland senior Aran Johnson. Wood and Rivard were the only other two athletes under 16:00.  Atticus Merriam got back on track, running 16:06 for 6th.  Some others that surprised in a positive way at FOC were Charlie Jacques (11th), Andrew Catalano (14th), Finley Knappe (15th), Nicholas Koziell (16th), and Henry Morrison (17th).

Some top athletes that took a tumble in the ranking include Ellis Wood (finished 4th), who was our top ranked Maine entrant to the Festival, and Enzo Giampaolo, who finished just 8th, which was a disappointment considering he was 2nd at the Southern Maine Classic. Tim Collins fell out of the top 10 rankings after finishing 30th. Ben Arsenault, William Coull, Pi Crosby, and Calvin Vincent all fell out of the rankings this week due to finishing outside the top 20 at FOC.

Week 3 Rankings (Posted 10/3/24)

Not many surprises this week, so as a result the top 10 remain unchanged.  Ring, Laverdiere, Keller, Rivard, Gilbert, and Johnson all won their meets to confirm that they belong near or at the top.  Wood did not run this week, but his previous performances speak for themselves.    Giampaolo, Small, and Merriam all reportedly ran tempos or less than all out efforts, so even though their results were not impressive, they remain ranked. The big headline this week is that William Coull is back and seemingly at full strength, as he was second at the WMC/SMAA crossover meet, including finishing ahead of ranked Pi Crosby.  Asher Valentine continues to climb after finishing just ahead of teammate Tim Collins this week.  Finley Knappe and Charlie Jacques make their debut in the rankings after second place finishes to Ethan Keller and Aran Johnson.

Week 2 Rankings (Posted 9/25/24)

The top nine boys remain where they were in last week’s rankings, but notably Sam Laverdiere was back racing this Friday and finished second to top ranked Aidan Ring.  Wood, Keller, Gilbert, and Johnson all won their meets.  Tim Collins moves into the top ten due to winning by 45 seconds over a strong field that included Griffin Merrill and teammate Asher Valentine. Crosby, Arsenault, McCourt all moved up due to wins at their respective meets. Calvin Vincent won over Pierce Coughlin by 11 seconds and thus enters the rankings.  Owen Beane joins teammate Ben Arsenault in the top 21, as he has been right behind at each of their meets so far this year.

Evan Small moves down one spot since he has not yet raced, but he has said that this week he will return to action, so we will be able to see where his fitness lies soon.  William Coull also hasn’t yet raced, and has dropped out of the rankings due to his status being more uncertain. Coull’s teammate Tait Harvey had an off day this week and has moved out of the rankings for now, too.  Griffin Merrill dropped a few spots due to an off race, but his performance at the Southern Maine Classic shows he can run with the best, so he remains in the top 21.

Week 1 Rankings (Posted 9/18/24)

Aidan Ring made a statement on Saturday with his win in 15:43 at the Southern Maine Classic, and as a result he vaults to #1 overall.  Ellis Wood remains at #2 and is currently undefeated this season. New #3 ranked athlete Enzo Giampaolo was just two seconds behind Ring at SMC.  Another big jump came from Aran Johnson, who ran well at both the SMAA Relays and Portland's meet at Kennebunk.  Griffin Merrill and Pi Crosby each  moved up over a half dozen spots due to strong runs at the Southern Maine Classic. Ben Arsenault of Orono is undefeated so far this year and as a result entered our weekly rankings.

Many of the falling athletes include athletes that have not yet raced due to injury.  Many of these athletes are expected to return soon, including Sam Laverdiere and Evan Small.  They remain ranked for now due to their past successes, but each week they remain out they will continue to drop. Another athlete that has dropped a bit from our preseason rankings is Atticus Merrium, but he has looked better each race so far this year and could very well reenter the top 10 as soon as next week.

There are many athletes that we are still watching, including three Camden Hills athletes (Tooley, Hedrich, and Meyer), two Brunswick athletes (Cote and Coughlin), and the defending Class A North champion (Lucas Hutchinson).
