Final End of Season Rankings (Posted 11/14/24)

The season is over, except for Nike and Footlocker regional.  These are our final rankings, based on State Meet and New England Championship finishes.

Week 7 Rankings (Posted 10/28/24)

Portland remained at #1 and remains the Class A favorite after a decisive win in Class A South. Hampden won easily in the Class A North to solidify their top 4 ranking, while Messalonskee reached their highest ranking of the season due to their 2nd place finish in that race.  Greely was the biggest mover this week, moving up nine spots due to their surprise 2nd place finish in Class B South, behind runaway champion Freeport. Yarmouth also exceeded expectation in the Class B South race and moved up.  In Class B North, John Bapst upset Caribou to win the title.  Orono dominated the Class C North, as expected to maintain their spot in the top 5.  Dirigo won in Class C South, but that wasn't enough to enter the rankings.

Week 4 Rankings (Posted 10/8/24)

As expected, FOC weekend resulted in numerous changes throughout the rankings, although the top four teams all remained steady after delivering expectedly strong performances.  Portland won the Festival of Champions by a handful of points over Scarborough, with Hampden Academy the 3rd Maine team in the rankings.  At their home meet, Freeport took the win over York.  The two teams that surprised the most this weekend were South Portland and Caribou. South Portland took sixth at Belfast when we had them projected outside the top 10.  Evan Small was officially back in full force for the Red Riots, which was a huge benefit for them in such a big meet.  Caribou put four athletes under 17:30 at the meet and as a result finished  tenth at the Festival. Other notable rising teams were Orono, who entered the top 5 of the statewide rankings for the first time this season, and Cheverus, who reentered the rankings after a one-week absence.

There were not any teams that fell more than three spots in the rankings this week.  Notably, Camden Hills dropped out of the top five after finishing in seventh place. Bangor, York, and Houlton also dropped two spots.  Houlton had a poor performance due to running without one of their top five.  For most teams, this isn’t a big deal, but this squad has an over 5 minute gap from their typical fifth runner to their typical sixth runner, so when they are not at full strength, their team score suffers greatly.  Teams falling three spots include Brunswick, Mt. Blue, Falmouth, and Gorham.  George Stevens/Blue Hill fell out of the rankings after finishing 27th in Belfast.

Week 3 Rankings (Posted 9/30/24)

Portland has risen to the top after a strong performance at their SMAA meet at Bonny Eagle.  The Bulldogs put 4 runners under 17:00 and their 5th wasn’t far behind.  The rest of the top 6 all won their meets, showing why they were already highly ranked teams.  Falmouth also got a win at the SMAA/WMC crossover meet and had some impressive times come out of their team on a tough Twin Brook course. Caribou continues to rise after their 2nd place finish to Orono at Sectionals, where they beat ranked teams in John Bapst and Houlton/GHCA.  Houlton reenters the rankings because although they did not all run on Saturday, they now appear to have a strong five runners, which bodes well for the postseason. Greely and South Portland bump up a few spots in the rankings due to the returns of William Coull and Evan Small.

Bangor lost to Hampden Academy this week, moving them down a couple of spots. Yarmouth moved down a few spots after nearly being beaten by unranked Grey New Gloucester. Some other teams that moved down were Deering, who moved down four spots, and Cheverus, who fell out of the rankings.  Both teams were missing a couple of key runners at their most recent meet and as a result underperformed.

Week 2 Rankings (Posted 9/23/24)

The top four teams all remain stationary after coming away with wins this week.  Bangor has climbed all the way to #5 after their win over Brunswick and Mt. Blue.  Orono continues to dominate their early season meets and has entered the top 10.  Deering got a win over Gorham, partially due to the fact that their #5 runner is showing improvement, which will be key for them as they still have more than a minute gap between #4 and #5.  Yarmouth was second to Freeport in their meet, and beat a good Greely team and moved up as a result. Caribou beat John Bapst to lay claim to a ranking spot.  Lastly, George Stevens/Blue Hill enters the rankings due to their win over a solid Mt. Desert Island team.

Within the rankings, the only team that fell by more than 2 spots was Greely, who have dropped to #21.  They have run without William Coull thus far, and will struggle to compete with the top teams until he returns.  Houlton dropped out as did Grey New Gloucester.  Houlton was a disappointing fourth at their most recent meet,  and will struggle unless they can find a much stronger 5th runner. Similarly, Grey New Gloucester fell out after finishing 4th behind York, Lake Region, and Poland.

Week 1 Rankings (Posted 9/16/24)

The biggest movers this week are Freeport, who moved up from #6 in our preseason rankings all the way to #2 after almost knocking off preseason favorite Scarborough. Bangor has jumped up 9 spots due to their strong performances in both of their meets thus far.  They were only 14 back of Camden Hills and 10 points behind Hampden Academy in their opener, and were just 9 points back of the Windjammers this week. Deering and Gorham have also made some noise due to some athletes taking a big step forward in the earlier going.

Some teams that have fallen include South Portland, who is waiting on the return of Evan Small, and Greely, who has run without William Coull thus far this year. Marshwood was preseason #8 but has dropped all the way out of our rankings.  MDI also dropped out but remains a team to watch once they run a 5K.

The top 4 teams remain difficult to rank.  Portland beat Scarborough at the preseason SMAA Relays, so they have a claim to 1st, but Scarborough stays at #1 due to their strong performances in both 5Ks thus far.  Camden Hills also has a claim to #1, as they are unbeaten so far and have quality wins over Hampden and Bangor.
