Girls Team Rankings

Final End of Season Rankings (Posted 11/14/24)

The season is over, except for Nike and Footlocker regionals.  These are our final rankings, based on State Meet and New England Championship finishes.

Week 7 Rankings (Posted 10/29/24)

In the Class A South, Falmouth had a very impressive showing, winning the regional title in decisive fashion over Portland.  The Navigators put 3 in the top 10 and all of their runners under 22 minutes on the challenging Twin Brook course.  Their top 5 average was 17 seconds ahead of Freeport, who won the Class B South by 30 points over York.  In Class C, Waynflete was able to get all of their top runners across the finish line and win the title, although Boothbay/Wiscasset was able to put up a good fight.  Other teams with good showings in the South were Kennebunk, who took 4th in class A, and Windham, who was able to a qualifying spot, despite not being projected to do so according to out predictions.

In the North, Camden Hills won the Class A title, which was somewhat surprising given that Hampden Academy had just won KVACs in a blowout just one week prior.  The Windjammers were able to put all of their runners in the top 15. In Class B, Mt. Desert Island won easily, as expected. Their 20 points was by far the lowest of all regional championship teams.  Old Town won a close battle for 2nd over  John Bapst and Presque Isle.  In Class C, only four teams fielded a roster, so all teams advanced. Houlton/GHCA won easily and that sets up an interesting battle between them and Waynflete this weekend.

Week 4 Rankings (Posted 10/8/24)

The girls team results were very exciting this weekend, with lots of surprises across the board. Mount Desert Island looked strong last week and had already risen a few spots into the top five, but I don’t think anyone expected them to win the meet in blowout fashion.  It wasn’t even close!  They put 5 individuals in the top 51 in the overall results, including three of the top five in the freshman race, and fifth place in the seeded race. York was a strong second and passed Falmouth and Portland in the rankings as a result. Waynflete and Greely entered the top 10 after their strongest performances thus far this season. Massabesic had a strong run at the Festival of Champions and is now ranked for the first time. Freeport continues to look strong after winning their home meet with a perfect score of 15 points.

There were a number of teams without top athletes running at FOC.  Falmouth was missing two of their top five runners,  Portland, Yarmouth, and Kennebunk were missing their top runner, and a few other teams were missing difference makers.  For the most part, teams are ranked assuming those athletes will return.  If those athletes miss another meet, though, then the teams will fall assuming those athletes may not be available moving forward.

The most notable dropping team was Portland, who fell to fifth from the top spot.  As mentioned earlier, they were without Samantha Moore, but even with her, they wouldn’t have been close to winning this meet.  Yarmouth fell out of the top 10 after finishing a surprising 17th place at FOC. Houlton also dropped a number of spots due to the large gap between their top two runners and the rest of their pack. Presque Isle fell from the 14th spot to completely out of the rankings doe to their 31st place finish in Belfast.

Week 3 Rankings (Posted 10/1/24)

Chaos in the girls rankings! There were many teams making substantial moves up and down as a result of last week’s results.  Portland surged to #1 as a result of significant improvements by a few of their athletes. Freeport was defeated by York by one point at at WMC meet, so they fell out of the top spot to #2 and York zooms into 4th.  It was York’s first race this year with a full contingent of athletes.  Mount Desert Island dominated the Sectional meet and as a result jumped into the top five. In a KVAC meet, Morse upset Camden Hills by a few points, although the Windjammers were missing a couple of key athletes.  Cape Elizabeth won their meet decisively and as a result have reached the top 10 of the rankings. Cheverus also had a strong result at their SMAA meet and rose two spots. Presque Isle continues to impress and weren’t far behind Houlton at the Sectional meet.  Marshwood moved up four spots due to their second place finish at the SMAA/WMC crossover meet, where they beat both Greely and Waynflete. Both the Rangers and the Flyers moved down as a result.  Kennebunk fell a few spots after losing to Scarborough last week. Bangor takes the final ranking spot due to some strong runs from their athletes.  They were second to Hampden Academy at a KVAC meet last week.

Week 2 Rankings (Posted 9/25/24)

There was very little movement in the girls team rankings this week.  Most of the movement was due to Orono dropping from #9 to out of the rankings.  Orono may have a good team this year, but they have yet to have a meet with 5 finishers, so it is unclear if they will even have a team score at the end of the year.  As a result, MDI and Marshwood both moved up one spot.  York moved up three spots due to a strong performance at the Manchester Invitational, beating Cheverus despite the Wildcats being without a couple of their top five. Greely beat Cape Elizabeth by 1 point, moving them up five spots. Presque Isle is now ranked after finishing just 5 points behind Houlton. Morse was a strong second to Camden Hills in their meet, earning them a spot, too.

Of note, Falmouth was third to Portland and Thornton Academy this week.  Despite this, they remain at #2 due to the fact that they rested many of their athletes this week.  Portland did get Samantha Moore back in the lineup at that meet, so that makes the team race between the Navigators and the Bulldogs much closer.

Week 1 Rankings (Posted 9/17/24)

Just like the boys rankings, Freeport has jumped up quite a bit from our preseason rankings and we now have them ranked #1 in the state, regardless of Class. Yarmouth jumped up 15 spots due to improvements across the board, but also due to the return of Madeleine Jones who was abroad last year. Thornton Academy ran quickly at their season opener at Scarborough and backed that up with a strong showing at the Southern Maine Classic. Boothbay/Wiscasset is ranked for the first time, and not just due to the breakout performance of Karen Higgins.  Other runners such as Laura Chapman have improved considerably. Gorham and Windham enter the rankings due to great pack times. While Laurel Driscoll faded this past week and did not finish, her presence vaults the Red Storm into the rankings.

Our preseason top 3 have all fell a bit.  Former #1 Portland is waiting on returns from Samantha Moore and Ava Chadbourne, and the rest of the team has not yet run to potential. Camden Hills has won their meets thus far, but some of their runners seem to have taken a step back from last year in the early results. Waynflete has dropped a few spots but could return to the top five once Grace Alexander returns to the lineup.
