Allie Hesler 12 19:27
Kallie Warner 12 19:28
Marina Violette 10 19:51
Bailey Shaw 10 20:47
2023 Outlook:
Bonny Eagle has won 8 of the last 10 class A titles, and it is hard to believe that trend won’t continue in 2023. The Scots bring back 4 top 5 finishers from the regional and 4 top 10 finishers from the state championship. Thibodeau won the individual title last year and is the favorite to finish 1st yet again. While winning the Class A title might be a bit of a foregone conclusion, Bonny Eagle will be looking to add their first ever New England title. Last year the Scots were 4th and in 2021 they were 2nd.
Quote from their coach:
We are excited to have a strong group of seniors next year and return 6 of our top 7 from a year ago. Seniors Addy Thibodeau, Allie Hesler and Kallie Warner are all top individuals from class A and seasoned athletes who bring big meet experience. Marina Violette had a great freshman year and looks to be in the top group of individuals again next fall and will be another key for us in the championship meets. Look for Bailey Shaw and Aveyln Walker to continue their outdoor success on the cross country course in the fall."'

Ellie Mainville 12 21:07
Addison Young 10 21:27
Avery Palmore 10 21:32
Jane Curtis 11 21:52
2023 Outlook:
Cape Elizabeth had their season derailed by illnesses just before the state meet. Without multiple contributors, they finished just 6th a week after a regional title that saw them beat the eventual state champs. You have to imagine that the Capers are even more motivated after that bad luck last year. Mahoney and Young arguably make up the best 1-2 duo in the state. Behind them is an great pack of capable runners, including youngsters Young and Palmore. Class B will be very close yet again, but Cape Elizabeth is the favorite.
Quote from their coach:
The girls return their entire top 7 from last spring and add rising sophomore Hannah Frothingham. Hadley Mahoney and Emma Young will lead the team. Hannah Frothingham, Ellie Mainville, Jane Curtis, Avery Palmore, Addison Young, Addie Mazzeo, and Maddie McEvoy should form a tight and talented pack. We had some tough luck with injuries and illness last year...but if we can stay healthy and motivated, we should have a strong team for states!

Maya Boyington 10 20:02
Clara White 10 20:14
Rossella Ruzzetta 12 22:26
Till Puleo 10 23:28
2023 Outlook:
Orono has only lost 1 state championship in the last 10 years, and it looks like their streak will continue into 2023. Ruth White has never lost a cross country race in the state of Maine, so Orono will always have an advantage through 1 runner. Clara White and Maya Boyington were 5th and 6th respectively at the Class C State Championships last year, so this team is incredibly solid through 3 runners. Beyond that, the Red Riots have a bit of a drop off to runners 4 and 5, but if the past is any indication, we should expect them to either bring in some new talent or have runners improve.

Molly Kenealy 12 19:31
Madelyn Hutchins 10 21:23
Karianna Hulstrom 10 22:00
Madelyn Herman 10 22:54
2023 Outlook:
York is coming off of a triple crown in the 2022-23 school year, having won state titles in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track. The Wildcats could very well keep the win streak going into this season. They return individual champ Cary Drake and arguably have the best number 2 runner in the state in Molly Kenealy . York does lose two of their scorers to graduation, but had a nice crop of young talent last year. They will hope that Hutchins, Hulstrom, and Herman can improve upon their PBs from their freshman year.
Quote from their coach:
We bring back two-time individual Class B champion Cary Drake and fellow senior Molly Kenealy (fourth in 2022), the best 1-2 combo in the state. We have a strong sophomore class includin Madelyn Hutchins, Karianna Hultstrom, and Madelyn Herman. We graduated only the #3 and #7 from last year's championship team. So we should be among the best teams in Maine again this season. Girls teams are different every year. We're fortunate to have a lot of quality but the whole team can fit in one mini-van. We don't have a lot of depth and that means we don't have a lot of margin for error.

Adeline Hall 12 20:56
Dylan Burmeister 11 21:14
Madeline Kallin 12 21:49
Maggie Thompson 10 22:47
2023 Outlook:
Lincoln Academy returns their whole top 7 from last year, and they will be looking to avenge a loss to Cape Elizabeth at the regional championship, which was decided on a 6th runner tiebreaker. They also were runner up to York at the state championships. The Eagles hope Audrey Hufnagel can lead them to championship this year. To do so, they will need the rest of their pack to close the gap to Hufnagel. This might be possible, as Hall and Burmeister actually finished ahead of Hufnagel in the 1600m at the Class B meet this spring. Additionally, Kallin was 5th in the 3200m and Thompson was a qualifier in the 400m. While they aren’t our favorite to win the Class B title, it certainly wouldn’t be a shock if they won it all.

Ava Chadbourne 11 20:24
Maia Endicott 11 20:52
Ella Vinkemulder 10 21:42
Alice Anderson 10 22:25
2023 Outlook:
Portland has consistently put out a good team over the past few years, but the 2023 looks to be the best team that the Bulldogs have had in a while. In fact, all 5 of the runners listed above were individual qualifiers to the Class A state meet this spring. Samantha Moore has shown that she can run with anybody over any distance and gives Portland a great frontrunner. Ava Chadbourne will likely be a top 10 finisher in Class A and Maia Endicott has a shot to do so as well. Vinkemulder had a great outdoor season focusing on the 1600m and 3200m and Anderson did the same over 800m. If they don’t win the state title this year, the Bulldogs will definitely be the favorites in 2024.
Quote from their coach:
We hope to build on last year's success and be at our best in the postseason. Staying healthy and developing the back half of our pack will determine how far we can go.

Zora DeSilva 11 22:08
Sydney Young 12 22:10
Sara Tennent 10 22:35
2023 Outlook:
Falmouth is a very intriguing team in 2023. While the Navigators do not have a true standout, they do have a number of athletes that are primed for a great year. Maeve Ginevan is the team’s top returning runner, finishing 17th place in Class A last fall. Further back, they have several athletes with great performances on the track. Bella Koepsell ran 5:46 for 1600m, Sydney Young ran 12:19 for 3200m and took 12th in Class A, and Sara Tennent ran 2:27 for 800m and took 4th indoors in that event. The Navigators are also coming off of a State Championship in the 4x800m this past spring. The Class A title will be difficult to achieve, but a runner-up finish is definitely possible this year.

Jenna Elkadi 11 22:22
Abigail Bergmark 11 22:27
Ava Pelkey 10 22:38
2023 Outlook:
Bangor won the Class A North title last year and are a favorite to do so yet again. They only lost 1 scoring runner from that team, and retain a lot of good talent. Katie McCarthy is a great front runner who almost made our individual countdown. Behind her is a slew of capable runner who will be looking to move up in the pack. Ava Pelkey wasn’t even a scorer last year but looks capable of moving up a few spots: she ran 2:34 for 800m and 6:00 for the mile as a freshman. The state title is probably out of reach for this squad, but conference and regional titles are good goals.

Josie Spaulding 11 21:55
Laurel Wight 10 22:29
Clorinda Simoneau 12 23:45
2023 Outlook:
Freeport appears to be one of the top teams in the state once again in 2023. Last year, they had one of the best packs in Class B. At their regional, their 1-5 gap was under 1 minute! This year it will likely be more of the same as they only lose one scorer from last year. Add in the fact that 3 of their 5 projected scorers this year were just freshmen last year, and that pack could be moving up significantly. One thing that the Falcons would greatly benefit from would be a runner to approach and break the 20 minute barrier. If they can develop one of their younger runners to do this, Freeport will be in great shape!
Quote from their coach:
We are losing strong senior leadership, but have a group of young ladies all committed to doing the work. Caroline Carter, Josie Spaulding, Lilah Hall, and Lucy Huggett, will anchor our girl's team while the rest of the top seven will work itself out over the course of the season. My expectation is that with a quality off-season program, and hard work, we will find ourselves in the mix.

Andrea Ross 10 22:36
McKenna Phillips 11 22:46
Joelle Hanscom 12 22:50
2023 Outlook:
Houlton is surprisingly deep for such a small school. It doesn’t hurt that they bring back the entirety of their top 7 from last year’s big meets. Teanne Ewings is an incredible #1 and should be ahead of almost everyone not named Ruth White. Natalie Johnson was a top 10 finisher last year in Class C and could place even higher this year. Andrea Ross had a great freshman year and will look to improve enough to run with her older sister this year. Houlton has placed 2nd in Class C each of the last two years, and while we have them ranked 2nd again heading into 2023, they do have a shot to bring home the title.

Maya Sanzone 10 20:42
Ava Sanzone 10 22:00
Brynn Butler 11 22:49
2023 Outlook:
In 2022, Marshwood finished runner up for the 2nd time in a row in Class A. Now, having graduated 4 out of their top 6 runners from that team, the Hawks will still be good, but they will probably take a step back from a year ago. Marshwood still does have a great frontrunner in Sarah McClellan, who took 3rd overall in 2021. The Sanzone twins will also be solid runners this year. A plus side for Marshwood is depth: they do have a few more runners not listed that were able to run in the 23 minute range last year.

Annie Reynolds 12 20:26
Fiona MacArthur 11 21:59
Sabine Sites 12 22:57
Sylvia Harvey 12 23:06
2023 Outlook:
The Rangers only return a total of 5 runners from last season. Nevertheless, Greely will still be very competitive in 2023. They have one of the better 1-2 punches in the state in Rowan Barry and Annie Reynolds. Barry took 4th in both the 1600m and the 3200m in class B this spring, and Reynolds was a top 10 finisher in Class B last cross country season. There is a bit of a gap to this team’s third through fifth runners, but not substantially so. The Rangers would really benefit from adding a few freshmen to help with their depth.

Lucy Olson 10 22:06
Anna Siegel 12 22:11
Grace Alexander 10 24:32
2023 Outlook:
Waynflete has a shot to surprise a lot of people in 2023. The Flyers won their regional last year and bring back their entire top 7 from that team. The thing that this team will benefit from the most though, is the emergence of Olson and Alexander during track season. Waynflete and Cheverus have a co-op team during the winter and spring, and that is when Olson and Alexander really shined. Olson ran a PB of 5:42 for 1600m and placed 5th at the Class A State meet indoors for 800m. Alexander ran 12:00 for 3200m and took 10th at the Class A State meet for that event. If Siegel and Jenkins can improve as well, this team will be really dangerous.

Cassie Middleton 11 20:28
Cara Rothwell 10 21:21
Jaden Johnson 12 21:43
2023 Outlook:
Camden Hills has a chance at the Class A North title this year. They return their top 4 from last year’s team that placed third. Van Ryn is our top ranked runner from Class A North and Cassie Middleton shouldn’t be too far behind: her PB is 19:43 from her freshman year, when she placed 5th in the North and 8th overall in Class A. Rothwell and Johnson should be third and fourth runners for the Windjammers. After them, they do have a few athletes capable of running in the 23 minute range, but they could benefit greatly if they could develop a 5th runner close to or under 22 minutes.

Adalyn Clark 10 21:44
Mara Muse 12 22:04
Norah McLeod 11 22:31
Anelise Peterson 12 23:06
2023 Outlook:
Kennebunk always has one of the larger teams in the state, so it is no surprise that the Rams return a solid core of runners despite graduating 3 seniors from last years’ team. They do not have many weaknesses: Keene is a solid #1 runner and then their #2 through #5 runners are all less than a minute away from each other. Their #6 runner in Anelise Peterson can easily step in if an injury occurs or an athlete has a bad race. Based on this, we project the Rams to have a similar finish to what they achieved in 2022.

Ellie Gilman 11 23:28
Hazel Goodwin 12 23:46
2023 Outlook:
The Dragons enter 2023 looking to improve upon the results from a year ago. The big thing they have working for them is the addition of Maeve Woodruff, who was unable to run in the postseason last year. Something working against Brunswick is that they lost 3 out of their top 4 runners from last year’s state meet. They will need the Perham twins to step up and run close to 20 minutes. If they can do that, this team will have a very successful year.

Molly Curtis 12 23:22
Grace Daigle 12 23:27
2023 Outlook:
Over the past few years, if we have learned anything about the Hampden Academy teams, they show up when it matters at the State Meet. They were not expected to finish as highly as they did in 2022, but came through in a big way and now return the entire top 7 from that team. Another reason to be optimistic about this team is that 4 of their top 5 returning runners are underclassmen. The Broncos will hope that Gretchen Plant can develop into a true frontrunner this year.
Quote from their coach:
The girls team has been building their team with both a deep group and a strong work ethic. The girls are always asking questions on where they can improve. They are all eminently coachable and seek to better themselves both physically and mentally to become tough racers.

Katie Thornton 12 22:31
Fiona Bergen 12 22:40
2023 Outlook:
Yarmouth appears to be improved in 2023. The Clipper Ships return 6 of their 7 runners from last year, including one of the better runners in the state in Madeleine Jones. Behind her, Yarmouth has one of the best packs in the state. Not many programs are able to boast 7 runners all under 23 minutes. The challenge for Yarmouth is that the Class B South looks pretty stacked in 2023, so they will have to be at their best at the end of the year to contend for a top 5 finish.

2023 Outlook:
MDI graduated 4 of their top 6 runners from 2022, meaning that the Trojans will need to rely on some new contributors this season. Despite this, they still remain the favorite in Class B North due to two reasons. First, they boast one of the best runners in the state: Amelia Van Dongen. She placed in the top 6 of every race she ran last year, and that includes the New England Championships, so MDI will always be in good shape through one runner. The other thing that MDI has is depth. Despite those graduations from a year ago, they have plenty of capable runners, and based on their program history they may have a freshman or two that contribute.

2023 Outlook:
Mt. Blue returns a solid core in 2023, losing only their #3 runner from last year’s state meet. McCourt was able to cover 1600m in 5:45 this spring, indicating an improvement might be coming on the grass as well. If the Cougars can get two more runners close to 7 minute pace to run with the 3 they already have, Mt. Blue should have another top 10 finish at the state championships again this year.

2023 Outlook:
Gorham looks to have a solid team in 2023. Rita Cummings will supply senior leadership and experience, having been a contributor for the Rams since she was a freshman. Behind her are 4 sophomores who will be looking to improve upon the times they ran in 2022. A weakness for Gorham this year will be depth: they have a 2 minute dropoff from the 4th runner to their 5th runner, and then an even bigger dropoff after their 5th runner.
