2024 Class B State Meet
Boys Distance Preview
4x800m
John Bapst is the top seeded team in this event, but a number of teams could be in the mix for the win in this event. Greely is running William Coull and Tait Harvey on the relay, two athletes that could give them legs that approach 2:00. York could also give them a run for their money, with 3 legs at 2:06 or better including Sam Hunter who has run 2:00 flat. Gray New Gloucester is holding Carter Libby out but they do have Preston Gerry (2:01 in the 800m) listed on the relay. Lake Region and Lincon Academy both only listed 4 athletes on their relay, but both quartets look strong and could push for a win, too. This race is wide open.
1600m
Cross country champ Sam Laverdiere is the top seed and is coming off a WMC title that he won in 4:20. Carter Libby, however, was not in that race, so expect him to go with Sam during the early parts of the this race. These two will likely go 1-2 with the order coming down to the last lap. Alex Gilbert is another athlete seeded under 4:30. If one of the athletes in front of him falters, he could steal a top 2 finish.
800m
Carter Libby is the top seed in the 800m and is coming off of a WMC title in this event. Also keep an eye on Matthew Cormier of Ellsworth, who has also run under 2:00 and will not be doubling back from the mile like Libby or third seed Alex Gilbert. Sam Hunter is another athlete to watch in this race. He was second at WMCs last week.
3200m
The 3200m is an intriguing race here, as there are three clear top seeds in Will Spaulding, Sam Laverdiere, and Carter Libby. Spaulding has the top seed time and Laverdiere and Libby are both former state champions. Aedyn Hughes and Aidan Ring are seeded fourth and fifth but are completely fresh, with the 3200m being their only event of the day. The top trio are all doubling or tripling back, so Hughes and Ring have a significant advantage here. Any of these 5 could win the eight-lapper.
