2024 Class B State Meet
Girls Distance Preview
4x800m
York is the clear favorite and could probably win the event even without one or two of their top girls on the relay squad. Nonetheless, they usually run their top squad and it looks like they are doing so here. There are several solid teams behind them fighting for the runner-up spot. Freeport is seeded second in 10:07, followed by Greely and Yarmouth that are both seeded at 10:13. The Falcons are likely to take 2nd and are led by sophomores Lucy Huggett and Lilah Hall, who both have PRs of 2:23. Greely will be without 2:22 sophomore Rowan Barry, who is not listed on the relay team. That opens the door for Yarmouth to snag the bronze spot. Leavitt could also be in the mix for a top 3 finish. Unfortunately, Cape Elizabeth is not running a relay, allowing their two stars Hadley Mahoney and Emma Young to pursue individual events.
1600m
The 1600m at the Western Maine Conference Championships was insane, with six girls breaking 5:15 in that race. Five of them appear in this race, with Cary Drake as the favorite. The battle for silver will be the interesting part, as just 1.85 seconds separated Zoe Carroll, Rowan Barry, Lucy Huggett, and Hadley Mahoney at WMCs. Barry and Mahoney will be the only ones of that quartet that are fresh for this race, and that could be the difference. Lilah Hall will look to join that group. Her 800 PB shows that she could have the ability to do so.
800m
Like the 1600m, the 800m is incredibly deep in class B this year. It took a 2:26 to make the fast section this year, and we saw eight girls at 2:25 or under at the WMC meet last weekend. Everyone in the fast heat is doubling (or tripling) back other than Abigail Roberts. Cary Drake is the favorite again with her teammate Zoe Carroll seeded just behind her in 2:20. Shealyn Brochu, despite being seeded third, has a significant chance to win this race. She was not part of that WMC meet last week so it is hard to know how she would have fared, but what we do know is that she is undefeated this season. She has won all three 400s, all six 800s, and all eight 1600s that she has raced this year, and all of them have been impressive times. She’s our pick to pull off the upset here.
3200m
Like the 800m, everyone is running their second, third or fourth event of the day here. Cary Drake is the favorite and has a 2024 best of 45 seconds ahead of the Rowan Barry, who is seeded second. Hadley Mahoney is seeded sixth here, but expect her to finish higher than that. This will only be her second event of the day and she has shown an ability in the past to run very fast over 5K, so this event should suit her very well. Also keep an eye on Olivia Wentworth, another candidate for the silver position.
