Tim Collins 11 17:03
Brody Simons 12 17:25
Asher Valentine 10 17:42
Gunnar Weil 10 17:42
2023 Outlook:
For the second year in a row, the Broncos left the state meet with both the Class A team and individual titles. Can they make it a three peat on the team side? It seems likely. Hampden loses individual state champ Charlie Collins but brings back virtually everyone else from their varsity roster. The Shain brothers will look to lead the team, and you have to think that Tim Collins and Asher Valentine will be able to become frontrunners as well, since their older brothers are both individual state champions. There are a number of talented teams behind them, but if the Broncos execute, they will win yet again.
Quote from their coach:
The boys team acts as a unified family with shared goals in sight at all times. They want everyone on the team to improve and feel a part of the team. This aspect shows the camaraderie that makes the team so special. They also start each season with a motto that they live by and it defines how they tackle each recovery run, workout, and race. These mottos help unite every member of the team! They believe in many things, but one common theme on HAXC is that you must run slow, in order to race fast, and only the mentally tough can be racers, all the rest are joggers and runners.

Aran Johnson 11 16:51
Charlie Jacques 11 17:01
Jason Hargesheimer 12 17:31
Owen Blades 10 17:46
2023 Outlook:
Portland comes in at #2 after coming up just short of a state title a year ago. The Bulldogs bring back most of the major pieces from that team and have a very experienced group of runners to rely upon. Nathan Blades should have a shot to win at any race he competes in, and the pack behind him has a lot of firepower. Portland is coming off a great spring that saw them run a stellar sub 8:00 time in the 4x800m, so that should give them confidence. If everything clicks for them at the end of the year, the Bulldogs could very well be state champions.
#3- Camden Hills Windjammers
Class A #3

2022 Results:

Colin Wright 12 17:33
Ben Pike 11 17:40
Henry McDevitt 12 17:50
Sam Tooley 10 17:58
2023 Outlook:
Camden Hills went from not qualifying for the State Championships in 2021 to a 3rd place finish in 2022. Now, they bring back their entire top 7 from last year and thus have a shot at the title this year. While they have no athletes that have run under 17 minutes, expect many of the runners listed above to have a shot to do so. If they can do that, then the Windjammers will be able to run with anybody this year.
#4- Bonny Eagle Scots

2022 Results:

Tyler Gilbert 12 16:53
Rowan McDonald 12 17:22
Harrison Dunne 11 17:25
Brodie Warner 11 18:04
2023 Outlook:
Last year, Bonny Eagle was in the painful spot of being the first team out of qualifying for the New England Championships. This year, the Scots bring back their whole top 7 and there is good reason to think they will be able to qualify this time. Xavier Lemieux has emerged as one of the best runners in the state and has the best 3200m PB out of all returning runners this year. The next 3 runners for Bonny Eagle are all very solid and could finish in any order depending on the day. If Warner or another runner could join that pack to get 5 across the finish line in the low 17 minute range, this team will be a true contender
Quote from their coach:
The Bonny Eagle boys team returns their entire top 10 from last year. We are led by Xavier Lemieux, an all-state performer last year and one of the top returners in the state this season.
Seniors Tyler Gilbert and Rowan McDonald and junior Harry Dunne have all had success both in cross country and on the track. Also looking to be key contributors will be juniors Brodie Warner ,Andrew Catalano, Devin Cannon. and senior Aiden Toy. Summer training will be a key to see if this group is ready to take another step forward.

Teo Steverlynck-Horne 12 17:01
Connor Smith 11 17:27
Alex Gilbert 10 17:52
Porter Towne 12 18:05
2023 Outlook:
Freeport is looking for a three-peat in 2023 after their dominant win a year ago. In fact, if you remove the Falcons’ top 2 runners from the results, they still win the title. Things might be a little closer this year because they do lose two of their scorers, including regional champ Henry Horne. However, Freeport still remains in a great position, returning 3 top 15 finishers from the Class B meet. The only thing that might trip up the Falcons is injury: they do have a severe drop-off from their 5th returner to their 6th and 7th returners.
Quote from their coach:
I think it's obvious our outgoing seniors were outstanding in many ways. In school, practice, and competition there will be a void. We are fortunate to a have great group of senior leaders that are ready to step in. Will Spaulding, Teo Steverlnyk-Horne, and Porter Towne are ready to lead this team. Other runners returning from the state roster will be Conner Smith, Alex Gilbert, and Owen Dawson. I am anticipating a strong freshman class with Ian Guzman, Marsden Shetterly, and Mungu Tussing all excited to start high school XC.

Ben Eager 11 18:33
Will Gear 12 18:34
Charlie Newton 12 18:36
Hans Bakke 11 18:37
2023 Outlook:
Might be a little surprised to see York ranked this highly. In fact, if you just look at personal bests of returning runners, York wouldn’t even place in the top 10 teams. However, there are plenty of reasons why every team should consider York to be a threat in 2023. The Wildcats are coming off of a 2nd place finish in Class B last year, and they bring back their top 5 finishers from both the regional meet and state meet. This spring, York was able to put five runners under 5:00 for 1600m. The Wildcats might be able to bring home their 2nd ever state championship.
#7 Brunswick Dragons

2022 Results:

Ryan McPherson 10 17:56
Nate Wayne 12 18:59
Gabe Eaton 11 18:04
Jonathan Koehler 11 18:07
Marshall Wall 11 18:18
2023 Outlook:
Brunswick is in a great position heading into this year. The Dragons are coming off of a state championship in the 4x800m relay this past spring and do bring back multiple members from that relay. Brunswick has a great low stick in Ben Klingle who should threaten the 16 minute barrier and could challenge for the win in the Class A North. Behind him is a stellar pack with that boasts a 2-7 gap of under 30 seconds. If that pack can move up together throughout the season, the Dragons will be able to run with anybody in the state.

Nicholas Koziell 11 17:49
Landen Springer 11 17:51
Benjamin Bouchard 12 18:13
Colby Shumway 12 18:53
2023 Outlook:
Scarborough enters 2023 with a very solid top 5 runners. Ethan Keller has already appeared in our individual countdown and is a top 5 threat at the state meet. Behind him are some other good runners. Colby Shumway will likely close the pack to the team’s 2-3-4, as he had a great track season, running 4:44 for 1600m. Rumor has it that the Merriam brothers might also be joining the squad this fall. If so, that would be big for the Red Storm because last year, Atticus ran 4:54 for 1600m as an 8th grader and Baxter ran 4:43 as a sophomore.
#9 John Bapst Crusaders

Jed Hartley 11 18:23
Jonathan Ouellette 11 18:36
Gilman Taylor 12 18:38
Henry Milan 11 18:59
2023 Outlook:
The 2022 Class B North champs are looking for even more success in 2023. Ethan Roach leads the way and Griffin Merrill shouldn’t be far behind, resulting in a great 1-2 punch for the Crusaders. A solid pack forms behind those two low sticks. In order to compete for the Class B title, John Bapst will need to see their 3-5 break into the 17 minute range. Jed Hartley seems primed to do that after running 4:51 for 1600m last spring.
Quote from their coach:
Top to bottom every boy on the team is actually excited for each other and they’ve created a culture of wanting to see everyone succeed. We have a few new additions this year that I think can make immediate challenges for the tough varsity positions and I’m excited to see how it all comes together

Henri McCourt 11 16:53
Luke Doscinski 10 17:46
Ben Hatch 10 17:59
Daniel Dalton 12 18:53
2023 Outlook:
Mt. Blue saved their best race of the year for last as they took 4th in Class A thanks to great runs from all of their athletes. Despite losing 6th place finisher Cyrus Evans, the Cougars still retain a strong top 3 which has the potential to be one of the best in the state. McCourt was a top 10 finisher last year, and Doscinski and Hatch could both approach the 17 minute barrier as sophomores. The gap to the 4th and 5th runners could be rather large for this team, but they do have some depth with many returning runners havings PBs close to 19 minutes. If Mt. Blue can get two of those runners in the low 18 minute range, this team will challenge the best in the state yet again.

Liam Nudd 10 17:29
Sebastian Hesser 12 17:54
Henry Hesser 12 18:36
Nathan Ashe 12 18:55
2023 Outlook:
Cape Elizabeth had a very disappointing end to its season last year when an illness outbreak prevented multiple members of their team from running at the state meet. In fact, none of the runners listed above competed at the state meet last year. As a result, this team will improve quite a bit on its finish from last year and should be towards the top of Class B. Some key runners for the season will be Liam Nudd, who had a great freshman year and should continue to improve, and Henry Hesser, who only raced once last year. If he can run with his brother, the Capers will be in good shape.
Quote from their coach:
The boys team brings back most of their top 5 from last fall. Liam Nudd, Seb Hesser, and Finn Morris will lead the way followed closely by Simon Shyka-Brown, Ben Gordon, Aidan Morris, Oliver Hardin and many others. This is a group with a ton of potential...and I think they will put in the work this summer. I'm excited to see what this season brings!

Thomas Leggat-Barr 12 18:21
Cullen Rafford 12 18:42
Zachary Vanni 12 18:52
Dominic Malette 11 18:58
2023 Outlook:
Greely had an incredible day at last year’s state meet. After barely even qualifying for the meet after a disappointing 7th place finish at the regional, Greely improved to finish in the bronze medal position at the state meet. Greely should be in the mix for a top 5 finish yet again. While they did lose a couple of contributors, including Hayden MacArthur, the Rangers bring back a talented group. They will count on William Coull, who scored multiple times at track state meets this winter and spring, and Tait Harvey, who was one of the best freshman in the state last fall. Behind them is a group that should utilize pack running.

Paul Sames 11 18:01
Sam Stocks 11 18:46
Michael Lawlor 10 18:52
Gus Whited 11 19:01
2023 Outlook:
South Portland lost most of their top runners to graduation, but still remain in a solid spot heading into this season. Evan Small has already appeared in our individual rankings and should be a stellar front runner for the Red Riots. Petrlik (14th in the 1600m in Class A ) and Lawlor (2:07 for 800m) had a good track seasons this spring as well. South Portland should be even better in 2024, as all their projected contributors for this season should be back again next year.

Kaleb Colson 12 16:06
Ren Salisbury 12 17:23
Asa Berry 12 18:53
Riley Hastey 12 18:56
2023 Outlook:
Sumner is a strong favorite for the Class C title this year. The Tigers bring a solid crew of 4 seniors into 2023. Kaleb Colson is coming off of a dominant spring, and he will have a chance at the Class C individual title. Salisbury should be a top 5 runner at the Class C meet as well. Berry and Hastey will be able to run together and keep the scoring low through 4 runners. The only question mark for this team is finding a solid 5th runner. Right now their best returner is well over 20 minutes.

Conor Glasier 12 19:00
Will Clark 12 19:14
Garrett Marshall 10 19:23
Thomas Mickael 10 19:24
2023 Outlook:
Lincoln Academy has all the attributes of a successful team in 2023. First, they return 5 out of their top 7 from last year’s regional and state championships. The Eagles boast a solid 1-2 punch of O’Mahoney and Russ, the former of which started the sport last year. If he can take a big jump heading into year 2, they could have a very low scorer in their first position. Lincoln should be very motivated with their top 5 returners being seniors.

Finn Henderson 11 18:24
Cruise LaBrie 12 18:42
Nolan Feyler 12 18:44
Jacob Mora 12 18:45
2023 Outlook:
Gorham doesn’t lose any of their 7 runners from the State Championships in 2022. However, they do lose Lucien Beardsley, who did not run at the state meet and was their top runner at different points last season. The Rams do return a tight pack of 6 to begin the 2023 season, which they will look to use to their advantage. If their pack can move up together, Gorham will be a force to be reckoned with in the South.

Fekele Lynch 12 18:41
Patrick Saltysiak 10 18:43
Tryg Soares 10 19:13
Chris Cooper 10 19:14
2023 Outlook:
The Trojans lost their top 2 runners from 2022, but look to have enough depth to remain competitive in 2023. MDI does have a solid frontrunner in Liam McKernan, followed by two experienced upperclassmen. The real determining factor for this team will be the trio of Saltysiak, Soares, and Cooper. If the rising sophomores can improve upon their marks from their freshman year, MDI could compete for the Class B North title.

Luke Dockham 12 18:52
Joe Riddell 12 19:17
Jackson Widerstrom 10 19:51
Griffin Smith 10 19:55
2023 Outlook:
The Hawks had a tough end to their season in 2022. They were without standout freshman Henri Rivard due to injury/illness and their second runner had an off day, leading to a disappointing 12th place finish at the regional. Marshwood will look for a better finish in 2023. While they lose a few impact seniors from last year, they had one of the best groups of freshmen in the state last year, and if that group can take another step forward, the Hawks will be in great position come October.

Griffin Vivian 12 18:57
2023 Outlook:
Things are looking up for the Stags in 2023. The team brings back the entirety of its top 7 from a year ago. Additionally, they were able to take 5th place in Class A in the 4x800m relay both indoors and outdoors, showing an improvement upon their finish during cross country. One strength for the Stags this season will be depth: they should be able to put 6 runners across the finish line before other teams have 5.

Noah Oliver 10 18:39

2023 Outlook:
Messalonskee could be a year away from being a real powerhouse. The Eagles did lose two of their top four from last year’s team, but they do return four solid runners that were all underclassmen last year. Coughlin will look to finish in the top 10 in class A, and Oliver and Arbour will try to close the gap to Cote after their stellar freshman campaigns. All the Eagles need is a solid fifth runner to round out the scoring.

Asa Tussing 11 18:07
Sam Anderson 12 18:24
Ellis Wood 10 19:01
Simon ‘Max’ Stratton 12 19:07
2023 Outlook:
On the surface, Deering doesn’t look like a strong team in 2023, but looks can be deceiving. The Rams don’t typically run the big invitationals that the other teams in the South do, so the 5K PRs you see above do not represent the capabilities that these athletes have. Sam Anderson, for example, finished 19th at the Class A South Regional, finishing ahead of multiple athletes that have run in the low 17s for 5K. Sophomore Ellis Wood should also be a huge contributor for the Rams this fall. He ran a stunning 10:01 for over 3200m and finished in 9th place at the Outdoor Track Class A State Championships. He has also run 4:47 over 1600m. The biggest challenge for Deering will be finding a solid 5th runner. Their 5th best returner runs well over 21 minutes for 5K.
