Class A South #1
SMAA #1
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 3rd
Class A State Championships: 2nd
Combined State Meet Finish: 2nd
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Ethan Keller 12 16:18
Atticus Merriam 10 16:50
Nicholas Koziell 12 16:56
Landen Springer 12 16:56
Baxter Merriam 12 17:00
2024 Outlook:
Scarborough peaked at just the right time in 2023, saving their best race for last and nearly taking the Class A State title. Now the Red Storm enter this year as a favorite. They have both low sticks and depth. We have Ethan Keller and Atticus Merriam ranked as top 5 athletes and top 10 in the state, so the Red Storm should have two in the chute before most teams have one. Behind them, Koziell, Springer, and Merriam all have bests at 17:00 or under, giving them five athletes total that can run at or under that time. Entering the season, no other team has more than two.
#2 - Camden Hills Windjammers
Class A #2
Class A North #1
KVAC #1
2023 Results:
Class A North Regional: 2nd
Class A State Championships: 3rd
Combined State Meet Finish: 6th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Will Meyer 10 16:49
Walker Hedrich 12 16:52
Sam Tooley 11 17:15
Graham Stoughton 10 17:27
Ben Pike 12 17:42
2024 Outlook:
The Windjammers had a great season last year, meeting expectations and placing 3rd t the State meet. They did so with a deep team and will look to do so again in 2024. Will Meyer had the best 5K personal best of all freshmen last year and will look to take another step forward to become a true frontrunner. Both he and Walker Hedrich enter the season ranked in our preseason top 25.
#3 – Hampden Academy Broncos
Class A #3
Class A North #2
KVAC #2
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 1st
Class A State Championships: 4th
Combined State Meet Finish: 4th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Asher Valentine 11 16:38
Tim Collins 12 17:02
Miles Shain 11 17:13
Gunnar Weil 11 17:32
Andrew Greene 11 17:40
Jack Scott 10 18:03
2024 Outlook:
Last year was a bit of a letdown for the Broncos. They entered as our preseason favorite for the Class A State title but only finished fourth. Hampden has the potential to improve on that finish this year. While they lose their #1 runner in Harrison Shain, they bring back most of the team that has been so successful over the past two years. Additionally, there is reason to be optimistic as the Broncos had some very strong individual performances during the track seasons this winter and spring.
#4 – Portland Bulldogs
Class A #4
Class A South #2
SMAA #2
2023 Results:
Class A North Regional: 1st
Class A State Championships: 1st

Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Aran Johnson 12 16:52
Owen Blades 11 16:58
Charlie Jacques 12 17:14
Henry Morrison 12 17:52
Jacob Harmon 11 17:59
2024 Outlook:
Portland broke through last year and won their first state title in almost 40 years. This year, they do have another shot at repeating, but the road will be much harder. They lose three of their best athletes from that team, including state runner-up Nathan Blades. Their top three returners, though, are very strong and have all taken steps forward since last cross country season.
#5 – Brunswick Dragons
Class A #5
Class A North #3
KVAC #3
2023 Results:
Class A North Regional: 3rd
Class A State Championships: 6th
Combined State Meet Finish: 8th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Ryan McPherson 11 16:54
Sam Cashman 12 16:58
Marshall Wall 12 17:06
Gabe Eaton 12 17:14
Jonathan Koehler 12 17:16
Trevor Campbell 12 17:45
2024 Outlook:
Depth was a strength for the Dragons last year and that will be the case again in 2024. They will likely sport one of the smallest 1-5 gaps in the state this year. They should also benefit from some great senior leadership that is experienced in running in the big championship meets.
#6 - Freeport Falcons
Class B #1
Class B South #1
WMC #1
2023 Results:
Class B South Regional: 1st
Class B State Championships: 1st
Combined State Meet Finish: 3rd
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Alex Gilbert 11 16:17
Conner Smith 12 16:44
Owen Dawson 12 17:59
Ian Guzman 10 18:33
Mungu Tussing 18:53
2024 Outlook:
The Falcons are looking to repeat in 2024. Having won the Class B title a year ago, expectations will be high for this team. Alex Gilbert will be a great frontrunner for this squad and he could even be in the hunt for an individual state championship. They will need to improve in positions 3-5 throughout the season.
#7 – South Portland Red Riots
Class A #6
Class A South #3
SMAA #3
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 7th
Class A State Championships: 7th
Combined State Meet Finish: 10th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Evan Small 12 16:12
Fischer Petrlik 12 17:27
Michael Lawlor 11 17:37
Paul Sames 12 17:41
Gus Whited 12 18:09
Brody Hamel 11 18:17
Tyler Bryant 12 18:17
2024 Outlook:
The Red Riots have the potential to be a great team in 2024. Evan Small could be an individual state title contender, but he is coming off injury and is just beginning to run. Behind him is a slew of depth, led by Fischer Petrlik, who has shown a great deal of potential. Michael Lawlor is coming off of a breakout track season over 800m. If South Portland can run as a pack this season, the sky is the limit for them.
#8 – Marshwood Hawks
Class A #7
Class A South #4
SMAA #4
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 4th
Class A State Championships: 8th
Combined State Meet Finish: 12th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Henri Rivard 11 16:14
Nate Kelley 11 17:23
Noah Tessier 11 17:43
Liam Haggerty 11 18:19
Griffin Smith 11 18:47
2024 Outlook:
Marshwood has a lot to be excited about in the next two years. Rivard is a state title contender this year as just a junior. And that is the theme for this squad, as the top returners for the team are all juniors. They will look to finish in the top 5 in Class A this year, but a state title could be goal in 2025.
#9 – Mt. Blue Cougars
Class A #8
Class A North #4
KVAC #4
2023 Results:
Class A North Regional: 4th
Class A State Championships: 9th
Combined State Meet Finish: 16th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Henri McCourt 12 16:28
Ben Hatch 11 17:45
Luke Doscinski 11 17:48
Damian Wynn 10 18:29
Noah Civiello 12 18:38
Eli Hoeft 12 18:38
2024 Outlook:
Mt. Blue always puts together a solid team and 2024 is no exception. Henri McCourt will lead the way once again and should put himself around 10th place at the Class A State Meet. After that, the Cougars have a solid pack that should be able to get 5 across the line before most other teams.
#10 – Greely Rangers
Class B #2
Class B South #2
WMC #2
2023 Results:
Class B South Regional: 5th
Class B State Championships: 3th
Combined State Meet Finish: 11th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
William Coull 12 16:17
Tait Harvey 11 16:51
Owen Cooper 10 18:16
Luca Cianchette 12 18:52
2024 Outlook:
Greely peaked well last year, improving from 5th at the regional to 3rd at the state level. This success was partially due to strong runs from top two athletes Coull and Harvey. Those low have taken another step up since then, as both have now run in the low 4:30s for 1600m. Cooper had a strong freshman year and Cianchette gives a solid fourth man, but the Rangers need to add a great fifth runner to enter the conversation for the Class B title.
#11 – Orono Red Riots
Class C #1
Class C North #1
PVC #1
2023 Results:
Class C North Regional: 2nd
Class C State Championships: 2nd
Combined State Meet Finish: 15th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Owen Beane 12 16:51
Ben Arsenault 12 17:18
Camden Brown 12 18:17
Andrew Barrett 11 18:41
Evan Gerbi 10 18:47
Noah Schneider 11 19:10
2024 Outlook:
The Red Riots bring back their entire top 5 from a runner-up finish at the state level last year. Orono now enters 2024 as the favorite to win the title. Beane and Arsenault both have chances at a Class C individual title, too. The four runners behind them should give them enough depth to win at the State Meet.
#12 – Messalonskee Eagles
Class A #9
Class A North #5
KVAC #5
2023 Results:
Class A North Regional: 5th
Class A State Championships: 12th
Combined State Meet Finish: 23rd
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Pierce Coughlin 12 16:30
Beckett Cote 12 16:48
Evan Crockett 10 18:04
Noah Oliver 11 18:28
Lexington Cote 10 18:29
2024 Outlook:
Messalonskee is in a good spot entering the 2024 season. Pierce Coughlin and Beckett Cote will be one of the best 1-2 punches in the state, and they should be able to get five across the line under 18:00.
#13 - York Wildcats
Class B #3
Class B South #3
WMC #3
2023 Results:
Class B South Regional: 2nd
Class B State Championships: 2nd
Combined State Meet Finish: 7th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Aidan Ring 12 16:22
Hayden Atkinson 11 17:06
Hans Bakke 12 17:11
2024 Outlook:
You can make the argument that York has the best top 3 returning runners in the State. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they have a huge drop off after that, and will need to find or develop two more solid runners. If they do so, they could be in the conversation for a State title.
#14 – John Bapst Crusaders
Class B #4
Class B North #1
PVC #2
2023 Results:
Class B North Regional: 2nd
Class B State Championships: 9th
Combined State Meet Finish: 29th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Griffin Merrill 12 16:49
Henry Milan 12 17:46
Jonathan Ouellette 12 18:12
Jed Hartley 12 19:00
Beckham Rand 10 19:11
2024 Outlook:
John Bapst had a bit of a disappointing season last year. They entered as a preseason favorite for the Class B title, but had to settle for a top 10 finish. This year the Crusaders will hope for an improvement, and we have them in the hunt for a Regional title and a top 5 finish at the State Meet.
#15 - Mt. Desert Island Trojans
Class B #5
Class B North #2
PVC #3
2023 Results:
Class B North Regional: 1st
Class B State Championships: 7th
Combined State Meet Finish: 21st
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Lucian Avila-Gatz 12 17:26
Chris Cooper 11 17:54
Patrick Saltysiak 11 18:13
Tryg Soares 11 18:33
James Goddard 10 19:01
2024 Outlook:
The Trojans had a very successful year in 2023, winning a regional title and having a strong showing at the state championship. This year they have a chance to repeat their regional title and improve upon last year’s state championship finish.
#16 – Bangor Rams
Class A #10
Class A North #6
KVAC #6
2023 Results:
Class A North Regional: 6th
Class A State Championships: Did Not Qualify
Combined State Meet Finish: Did Not Qualify
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Jackson Dineen 11 17:52
Samuel Dineen 10 17:54
Samuel Bergmark 10 18:04
Parker Ashfield 12 18:19
Darcey Lees 11 19:01
2024 Outlook:
Bangor’s season came to a tough end last year. Their 6th place finish at the regional wasn’t a bad one, but due to only 10 teams lining up, the Rams were sent home. This year they will be in a similar ballpark but will hope to progress to a top 5 finish and compete at the State Championships. Their team last year was quite young, which bodes well for athletes improving heading into this year.
#17 – Bonny Eagle Scots
Class A #11
Class A South #5
SMAA #5
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 2nd
Class A State Championships: 5th
Combined State Meet Finish: 5th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Harrison Dunne 12 16:55
Andrew Catalano 12 17:41
Brodie Warner 12 18:31
2024 Outlook:
Bonny Eagle has been one of the top teams in the state over the past few years, but this year will be a bit more of a challenge for the Scots. Harrison Dunne is a great #1 runner, having placed in the top 10 at last year’s regional. Catalano and Warner also have good experience. If the coaching staff can develop strong fourth and fifth runners, this team could approach a result similar to previous years.
#18 – Houlton/GHCA
Class C #2
Class C North #2
PVC #4
2023 Results:
Class C North Regional: 5th
Class C State Championships: 5th
Combined State Meet Finish: 28th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Malachi Witmer 10 17:43
Brayden Drake 10 17:54
James Brady 11 18:19
Shawn Coty 10 18:56
2024 Outlook:
Houlton looks to be in for a strong year in 2024. While they were only fifth in Class C a year ago, most of their top 7 were freshmen, so improvement heading into this year is likely. Malachi Witmer should be a contender for a top individual finish in Class C. If all goes perfectly, they could be the ones bringing home a state title at the beginning of November.
#19 – Falmouth Navigators
Class A #12
Class A South #6
SMAA #6
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 9th
Class A Championships: 14th
Combined State Meet Finish: 25th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Christopher Jaynes 12 18:01
Connor Lund 11 18:13
Jon Kearns 10 18:17
Olin Johnson 12 18:25
Sean Lowery 12 19:20
2024 Outlook:
Falmouth narrowly advanced to the State Championship last year. This year, their path looks a bit easier. While no distinct frontrunner sticks out, the Navigators have a deep team, even beyond the runners listed here.
#20 – Cheverus Stags
Class A #13
Class A South #7
SMAA #7
2023 Results:
Class A South Regional: 5th
Class A State Championships: 11th
Combined State Meet Finish: 19th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Arman Gurcan 11 17:55
Jackson Kayne 11 18:03
Cash Kellen 12 18:12
Logan Whitmarsh 12 18:49
2024 Outlook:
Cheverus had their best year in almost a decade in 2023. The Stags do lose their top 2 from that team but their core is mostly intact. They will hope to match or slightly improve upon last year’s finish.
#21 – Lake Region Lakers
Class B #6
Class B South #4
WMC #4
2023 Results:
Class B South Regional: 4th
Class B State Championships: 5th
Combined State Meet Finish: 13th
Notable Returning Runners: (Based on Personal Bests)
Sam Laverdiere 12 15:45
Aidan Roberts 12 16:53
2024 Outlook:
It’s hard to rank Lake Region entering the 2024 season. They have the returning individual Class B champion as well as a very strong #2 in Aidan Roberts. Other than that, though, the Lakers have very little depth.
